About this Course
Smart cities are not a just a concept or a dream of the future. It is a sector that is very dynamic and vibrant and has seen an impressive growth and increasing offers of promising employability prospects over the last years.
The DevOps Competences for Smart Cities MOOC (Smart DevOps MOOC) was developed to take on this challenge and offer high quality educational course that will enable the participants to develop and acquire essential competencies needed to tackle the challenges of managing and evolving of smart cities.
The Smart DevOps MOOC offers:
- State-of-the-art curricula developed and delivered by experts under high standards of quality assurance
- 15 modules delivering transferrable and digital skills for Smart City professionals
- A flexible weekly workload and schedule
- Personalised support provided by experienced lecturers
- Opportunity to meet, connect and network with peers from all over Europe
- Certification in accordance with the European and national qualification frameworks and the European credit system for vocational education
- Opportunity for participants who will successfully complete the MOOC to enlist in specialised training for Smart City Planner, Smart City ΙΤ Manager and Smart City IT Officer
What you’ll learn:
- New ways how software is designed and delivered today and how this influences its development and deployment cycles
- Overview of smart city ecosystem, including platforms, governance, business models and financial management
- About new technologies (Cloud Computing, IOT, Data Analytics)
The online course was developed and is organized by experts of the Erasmus+ Sector Skills Alliance project titled DevOps Competences for Smart Cities MOOC (project number 601015-EPP-1-2018-1-EL-EPPKA2-SSA). The aim of the project is the professional development through appropriate training of the personnel who work or will work in municipalities, which are gradually transformed into Smart Cities. This will be achieved with upskilling them with new IT skills and knowledge that are required for smart city management, such as the DevOps methodology.
One of the main project’s objectives is to define new job profiles, for those who plan to work as smart city professional. These new job profiles are:
- Smart City Planner
- Smart City ΙΤ Manager
- Smart City IT Officer

Prerequisite
No prior DevOps expertise necessary.
Course Completion And Certification
A participant successfully completes a module if they have a grade of 60% or higher in the assessment test(s) of the module. An assessment test has multiple choice questions and can be taken twice. A participant who completes all courses successfully will be awarded a Certificate of Completion and will qualify for a second round of specialized training (again without fees).
Course Approach
Unlike a traditional “course”, this one is delivered “on-line”. The lecture is through presentations and videos, which are available 24/7. Take the course at your own pace, and interact with other students (and the trainers) through the community of practice. There are no late night calls, and you don’t have to travel!
Each week, one or more lessons will be released. Each lesson contains the learning materials to study, homework for you to work on, and a quiz to assess your learning.

Currently, Professor Dr. Panos Fitsilis is full Professor at University of Thessaly (UTH), Greece and Lecturer at Hellenic Open University (HOU).
Previously Prof. Fitsilis was Professor at University of Applied Sciences of Thessaly (UAST), visiting professor at Innopolis University, Kazan, Russian Federation.
Prof. P. Fitsilis has extensive project management experience with the development and deployment of large IT systems and extensive management experience in various senior management positions such as: Director of School of Business and Economics at UAST, Vice President of UAST Research Committee, Head of Project Management department at UAST, Director of Research Laboratory «Business Information Systems and eCommerce», Head of Business Unit at Intrasoft International, a large international IT company, etc. During his work as Business Unit manager at Intrasoft International he was responsible for the development, deployment and operation of a number of prestigious IT systems for European Commission, (CORDIS, and Electronic Proposal Submission System – EPSS), European Parliament, European Central Bank, etc.
Further, he has worked in more than 50 research or commercial projects, in various roles. He is the author of four books: “Contemporary Business Information Systems”, “A practical guide to entrepreneurship – case studies”, “Software Project Management”, “Object Oriented Development using UML” and author of approximately 100 papers published at scientific journals and international conferences. His research interests include Project Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Software Engineering, Business Information Systems, Social Media Applications, Smart Cities, etc.

Vassilis Gerogiannis, Professor, Dept. of Digital Systems, University of Thessaly (academic subject: Analysis & Design of Systems & Projects with Emphasis on Decision Making). Adjunct Professor, Hellenic Open University. Visiting Professor, IPAG Business School (France), American University of Beirut (Lebanon). He holds a Diploma in Computer Engineering and a PhD in Software Engineering (University of Patras). From 1992 until present, he participates in several R&D and educational projects. Author/co-author of 120 papers published in international journals/conference proceedings and cited in a plethora of citations. Co-author/editor of three scientific books. Guest editor/reviewer in international journals. Program chair/invited speaker in international conferences. He has received the “best paper award” in two international conferences.

Dr. Leonidas Anthopoulos is a Professor in e-business at the University of Thessaly, Greece. He also serves as a Special Advisor of the Mayor of Trikala, Greece and he has an extensive research and management experience of complex ICT projects such as the smart city projects. During his current mission and at his previous job positions (as an Expert Counselor at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as an ICT project manager at the Information Society S.A. (Greece)) he planned and supervised several critical projects.
He is a member of numerous committees, worth mentioning the ITU United for Smart and Sustainable Cities Group (co-rapporteur of Q5 of the SG20), he is the head of the Smart and Sustainable cities’ working group for the Greek Standards, the Associate Editor of the IET Smart Cities journal etc. He is the author and editor of several book collections, which can be located in Cities, Technological Forecasting and Social Change and Government Information Quarterly (ElSevier), ACM Computing Surveys, monograph for Springer etc. His research interests concern, among others, smart city, e-Government, Enterprise Architecture, Strategic Management, etc.

Yiannis Kiouvrekis is a researcher in National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) since 2014. He is a member of the Logic and Formal Methods Group and his research interests focus on Logic, Logic Programming, STEAM, and application of Logic in Statistics. Yiannis Kiouvrekis has received his Diploma Degree from the Department of Mathematics of NTUA, Master Degree “Applied Mathematical Analysis” from NTUA, and his PhD from Dep. Of Mathematics of NTUA. He has published papers on the role of Argumentation Theory in Decision Theory, with areas of application in the procedure of mathematical modeling and Statistics.
